YOUR SUNDAY INSPIRATIONAL

Make a difference

As our nation spirals into a black hole of rage, fear and denial, one might be forgiven for feeling helpless. However, some old, even ancient ideas might offer us a lifeline in our struggle to ward off political and even physical collapse.
People have long recognized the idea of vice and virtue and the importance for each of us to avoid the former and cultivate the latter. While it may be easier to focus on the sins of others, I would suggest that working on ourselves might be more productive. These times present unique challenges, but aren’t many of them rooted in lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride? And wouldn’t our world benefit from an increase in the antidotes: self-control, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness and humility?
It is key to remember that we are responsible for our own actions and those of others do not dictate our own. Or, as your mother always taught you, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
So you’ve read my little letter and might be thinking “that’s nice” or “if only more people did that.” Thanks for the sentiment. I would humbly ask that you take it a step further and spend five minutes each morning committing to those virtues and five minutes each night assessing how you lived up to them. If we start to see progress in ourselves, maybe it will be a little easier to have hope for the world.
