Zombie cells central to the quest for active, vital old age August 30, 2022, 10:04 PM In an unfinished part of his basement, 95-year-old Richard Soller zips around a makeshift track encircling boxes full of medals he’s won for track and field and long-distance running. Without a hint of breathlessness, he says: “I can put in miles down here.” Steps away is an expensive leather recliner he bought when he retired from Procter & Gamble with visions of relaxing into old age. He proudly proclaims he’s never used it; he’s been too busy training for competitions, such as the National Senior Games. Soller, who lives near Cincinnati, has achieved an enviable goal chased by humans since ancient times: Staying healthy and active in late life. It's a goal that eludes so many that growing old is often associated with getting frail and sick. But scientists are trying to change that — and tackle one of humanity's biggest challenges — through a little known but flourishing field of aging r

It was the longest game in baseball history. And it made a hero of one man for a day Nellie Gilles  August 31, 2022 5:00 AM ET The Longest Game  is a new documentary from ESPN's 30 for 30 and Radio Diaries. ESPN Baseball is sometimes called "the timeless game." Unlike football, basketball or soccer, there's no clock and the two teams keep playing until there's a winner.  In theory, the game could go on forever.  On April 18, 1981, two minor league teams met for an early season game of no real consequence. It was AAA baseball, one step below the major leagues. The Pawtucket Red Sox were playing the Rochester Red Wings at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.  On the field were future hall-of-famers Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken, Jr. and 20 other players all hoping to make it to the big leagues. Dave Koza was Pawtucket's first baseman. "To be a part of AAA, you're only one step and 40 miles from Fenway Park," Koza said. "If you keep playing hard, maybe

What are your plans for Labor Day Weekend?

Image
OR, was we call it here in Canada - Lab ou r Day Weekend. My son arrives tomorrow night for the weekend and first time I have seen him since Covid. So stalked up on beer (his preference) and vodka (my preference) and wine (Geri's preference). Though I already climbed the mountain last weekend, and barely lived to tell about it, the plan is to tackle it again. (With my son) OK OK, we ain't talking exactly the Rockies here, but just the same, damn proud of myself considering I am about 40 lbs overweight and nearing 70 yrs of age. Part of the trail to the top is almost vertical with lots of jetting rocks and people have been known to get hurt attempting the climb: IF I make it the rest of the weekend will be spent at home just catching up with my son. BUT, enough about me.......... What are YOUR plans? Are YOU still being Covid conscious? Or are you going to go FULL PARTYING?  Drop in and say Hi, otherwise I will see you all on the other side of the weekend! ENJOY.

Renowned Canadian News Anchor Fired After 25 Years Of Work For Letting Her Hair Go Gray One of Canada's largest news organizations is feeling the heat after allegedly firing longtime news anchor Lisa LaFlamme for letting her hair  go gray . LaFlamme took to Twitter to announce that she'd been fired from CTV National News, one of the country's most-watched news programs. Reactions: Dave Hodge @davehodge20 After all is said about @LisaLaFlamme_ and her departure from CTV, the inescapable conclusion and indefensible network position is as follows: 58-year-old women are too old. 58-year-old men aren’t. Geoffrey P. Johnston @GeoffyPJohnston What do sexism and ageism look like in Canadian journalism in 2022? Bell Media replacing a trailblazing 58 year old woman journalist as anchor of CTV's nightly national newscast with a less accomplished 39 year old man. #LisaLaFlamme https://littlethings.com/entertainment/lisa-laflamme-fired/lisa-laflamme-4 MORE CONDEMNATION: 'Some
