Right-Wing Operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman Must Spend Hundreds of Hours Registering Voters After Targeting Black Communities with ‘Despicable’ Robocall Scam After sending thousands of admittedly fraudulent robocalls to largely Black communities in Cleveland, Ohio, right-wing operatives  Jacob Wohl  and  Jack Burkman  have been dealt a sentence forcing them to expand the vote rather than suppress it. An Ohio judge ordered them to spend 500 hours registering voters living in low-income neighborhoods in the Washington, D.C. area. “These two individuals attempted to disrupt the foundation of our democracy,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor  Michael C. O’Malley  said in a statement. “Their sentence of two years of probation and 500 hours of community work service at a voter registration drive is appropriate.” His office told Law&Crime that Wohl and Burkman also must pay a $2,500 fine and wear an ankle monitor with home confinement beginning each day at 8 p.m. for the first six months

NOW, here is a cheesy story for you.....

Woman sues Kraft Heinz for $5 million, says mac and cheese preparation isn’t as advertised A Florida woman is suing the Kraft Heinz Company for $5 million, claiming they misled the public about the time it takes to prepare its Velveeta microwavable mac and cheese cups. Court records show that a West Palm Beach-based law firm  filed the lawsuit  on behalf of Amanda Ramirez in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida on Nov. 18. Ramirez is listed as the main plaintiff for the class-action suit, which alleges Kraft Heinz violated federal law by saying Velveeta Shells & Cheese cups take 3½ minutes to prepare. “Ready in 3½ minutes” is printed on the box, which is the amount of time the product takes to cook in a microwave. However, the suit says it takes more time to complete the other required steps. This is how the lawsuit describes the cooking process: “First, consumers must ‘REMOVE lid and Cheese Sauce Pouch.’ Next, they must ‘ADD water to fill line in cup. STI

Regarding shrinkflation: Good thing or bad?

Image
Shrinkflation in action! One of the core traits of modern marketing is deceit. Marketers are all now experts at the cognitive biology and social behavior of deceit and creating illusions. They're superb at what they do to get us to buy on the basis of as much illusion as their magic can conjure. Recently, consumer inflation has sparked a massive marketing movement in shrinkflation. The NYT comments on the current phenomenon: A few weeks ago, Edgar Dworsky got a promising tip by email. “Diluted cough syrup,” read the message, accompanied by a photo of two packages of syrup with a curious difference: The new one appeared to be half the strength of the old one. Mr. Dworsky gets emails like this frequently, alerting him to things like a bag of dog food that discreetly shrank from 50 pounds to 44 pounds. A cereal box that switched from “giant” to “family” size and grew about an inch taller — but a few ounces lighter. Bottles of detergent that look the same, but the newer ones come with

Canada: Why the country wants to bring in 1.5m immigrants by 2025

Image
Canada is betting big on immigration to fill the gap in its economy left by aging Baby Boomers leaving the workforce - but not everyone is on board with bringing in so many people from abroad. Earlier this month, the federal government announced an aggressive plan to take in 500,000 immigrants a year by 2025, with almost 1.5 million new immigrants coming to the country over the next three years. This plan would see Canada welcome about eight-times the number of permanent residents each year - per population - than the UK, and four-times more than its southern neighbour, the United States. But a recent poll shows that there is also anxiety about welcoming in so many newcomers. Canada bets big For many years, Canada has tried to attract permanent residents - landed immigrants who have the right to stay in the country indefinitely but who are not citizens - to keep the population and the economy growing. Last year, the country took in 405,000 permanent residents - the most in its entire

For this 89-year-old Gullah Geechee chef, cooking is about heart

Heard an interview the other day with    Emily Meggett   on NPR, where she expressed her belief that God had called on her to feed the poor of her Gullah Geechee community and I got more curious about her as I listened to the interview, so looked her up on the net. Interviewed by  ANASTASIA TSIOULCAS  NPR Lots of home cooks would be excited to get a book deal. In the case of one home chef, she got that opportunity at the age of 89 years old.  Emily Meggett  is from the low country of South Carolina, and NPR traveled to her home on Edisto Island to appreciate some of her cooking. Edisto Island is a beautiful, quiet community of about 2,000 people, nearly an hour's drive south of Charleston. The roads are framed by massive oak trees draped with Spanish moss; there's a tang of sea salt in the air. Ms. Emily Meggett is known far and wide as the matriarch of Edisto. I'm with her in her cozy home kitchen, where she's going to teach me how to make a local classic: shrimp and

Turkey houliganism -- the new tyranny
