Study: A microdose of LSD could alter a fundamental human experience

Study: A microdose of LSD could alter a fundamental human experience Emma Betuel 8.28.2020 2:00 PM In large doses, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)  can repair  damaged neurons  in the brain, and reveal new ways of seeing the world. In small doses,  microdosers  chase the effects of the drug on creativity or mood, without the full psychedelic experience.  However, a new study suggests that even a microdose might be able to change a powerful human sensation: pain.  Microdoses of  LSD  increased pain tolerance and decreased ratings of painfulness and unpleasantness. Here, a microdose was defined as about 20 micrograms. Twenty-four   college students were asked to plunge their hands into frigid 37-degree water and see how long they could handle the chill. Compared to a placebo, students on 20 micrograms of LSD could keep their hands in cold water about  20 percent longer  and had lower ratings of unpleasantness and painfulness.  Greater increases in pain tolerance were &q

France horse killings stun countryside after 'barbaric' slayings with mysterious, ritual-like mutilations Up to 30 attacks have been reported in France since February Travis Fedschun A spate of gruesome  killings  of  horses  and ponies across pastures in  France  has left police baffled and rural communities terrified as the  mysterious slayings  appear to only be growing. Up to 30 attacks have been reported in pastures across the country since February, the most recent taking place on Thursday in the  Saone-et-Loire region , in east-central France. “All means are in motion to end this terror,” Agriculture Minister Julien Denormandie  tweeted  Friday. Denormandie, who visited the region on Friday, told France-Info that authorities are "excluding nothing" in the brutal attacks. “Ears are cut off, eyes removed, an animal is emptied of its blood ...,” he said,  describing the morbid fates befalling one of France's most belov

An Honest Opinion

Artwork by Roxanna López Hello Peeps! I would like to share with you some piece of work that I've been polishing today. I'm not completely satisfied with it; actually, I think it is rather a piece of shit but I wanted to have a second opinion on it. Feel free to share whether you like it or hate it.  Cheers, Roxanna

News of the Day

By Best in Moderation Hello all! I think it's important in our day and age to keep up to date with the most important news. AS such, I'd like to share two stories with you today: Stressed Elephants Will Be Medicated With Marijuana At Warsaw Zoo   According to the  Guardian , three African elephants at the zoo will be given liquid doses of a high concentration of cannabidiol or CBD, the chemical compound found in marijuana plants known to have relaxing effects. “It’s an attempt to find a new natural alternative to the existing methods of combating stress, especially pharmaceutical drugs,” explained Agnieszka Czujkowska, the veterinarian in charge of the initiative. As it stands, the three elephants will be given their doses of CBD through their trunks. It will take at least two years of trials before zoo officials can determine whether the project is effective or not. https://allthatsinteresting.com/elephant-cbd-treatment And California Man Defends His Home From Wildfire With C

Trump's Tweets of Fury Are Dividing America for Trump to Conquer and Rule No Great Nation Has Ever Ended so Stupidly: That's Why if Trump is Successful  The United States Will Not Be Classified as One of the Great Historical Nations Trump Seeks ‘Law and Order’ in Tweetstorm on Portland Death (Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump unleashed a tweetstorm early Sunday about Portland, Oregon, hours after a man was killed there during clashes between a large group of Trump supporters and Black Lives Matter demonstrators. The string of messages enlivened criticism from Democrats, including presidential candidate Joe Biden, that Trump is looking to inflame unrest in U.S. cities because he believes it will help his re-election campaign. “I condemn violence of every kind by anyone, whether on the left or the right. And I challenge Donald Trump to do the same,” Biden said in a statement Sunday. “It is not a peaceful protest when you go out spoiling for a fight.” Biden said “the job of a p

Are you an aggressive punctuator?

Image
Today, reading the usual news, nonsense and in-between on the internet, I run into this, from the  New York Post: " The punctuation problem ignited over social media recently, with Gen Z and millennials agreeing that ending a sentence with a period is overly hostile and, worse yet, extremely uncool." “The thing is, in a messaging conversation, a period is simply not necessary,” she explained. “It’s clear when you’ve finished your thought already, so what function does the period fulfill? As a result, using a period in messaging now looks rather emphatic, and can come across as if you’re quite cross or annoyed.” Well, geepers. I'm a touch-typist.  I have been a touch-typist for over fifty years.  I don't think about these things.  If I actually pay attention to what my fingers are doing,  that's  when I screw up and misspell things!  I would have to concentrate in order  not  to punctuate a sentence. So my response is in this meme: That aggressive enough?

Preventing infection, facilitating healing: New biomaterials from spider silk

Image
Preventing infection, facilitating healing: New biomaterials from spider silk New biomaterials developed at the University of Bayreuth may eliminate the risk of infection and facilitate healing processes. A research team led by Prof. Dr. Thomas Scheibel has succeeded in combining these material properties which are highly relevant to biomedicine. These nanostructured materials are based on spider silk proteins. They prevent colonization by bacteria and fungi, but at the same time proactively assist in the regeneration of human tissue. They are therefore ideal for implants, wound dressings, prostheses, contact lenses, and other everyday aids. The scientists have presented their innovation in the journal  Materials Today . It is a widely underestimated risk of infection: Microbes settling on the surfaces of objects indispensable in medical therapy or for quality of life generally. Gradually, they form a dense, often invisible biofilm that cannot be easily removed, even by cle

Finnish 'Polite Type' font combats cyberbullying

Image
Finnish 'Polite Type' font combats cyberbullying by Peter Grad , Tech Xplore A Finnish tech company has released an unusual tool to help combat cyberbullying: a type font. A team composed of specialists dealing with bullying, racism and other forms of intolerance devised a  font  that blurs out obscene words and replaces other hurtful words with gentler ones. The open source font works with popular word processors. For instance, if a user attempts to type "I hate you," the sentence will automatically change to "I disagree with you." Typing "She is ugly" is changed to "She is not traditionally beautiful." Derogatory racial terms are changed to the proper name of the race or religion. Explicit obscenities are blurred out. Less offensive terms are altered. "You are stupid" is changed to "You are silly." Other insulting terms such as "dumb" and "idiot" are blurred out. The font is

Diamond and Silk suggest Fox News is racist

Diamond and Silk suggest Fox News is racist for dumping them over COVID-19 conspiracies that were also embraced by white hosts like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity Diamond and Silk have suggested that Fox News was racist for sacking them over airing COVID-19 conspiracy theories that were also shared by white hosts,  according to The Daily Beast. The Black conservative vloggers made the claim in their upcoming book, "Uprising." In it, the duo said they were punished for their remarks, while hosts like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity, who are white, were not. "Was this part of the systemic racism that everybody was talking about?" they said. The pair was hired by Fox News in November 2018 to produce videos for their Fox Nation platform. Their contract was terminated in April 2020. In their Fox Nation videos, they suggested the coronavirus was "man-made" and that the US death toll was being fabricated to damage President Donald Trump. Fox News declined to c
