The History of Hump Day

Love it or loathe it, the term Hump Day along with associated images of camels filter through our social media feeds every Wednesday. The midpoint of a typical working week, it signifies the proverbial hill and the downward slope to Friday and the coveted weekend.

But where exactly did the term come from?

According to the Interweb, hump day was coined in 1965 by American singer Roy Man, and then immortalized ten years later by JJ Cale when he wrote the song Friday, which include these lyrics:

Wednesday’s hump day, hump day’s Wednesday/Over the hump, the week’s half-gone/If I had my pay on Wednesday I’d hang out, the hump day’s gone.”
