Live Again by Lance

Today, my second love.  Live theater.  The release of the live stage production of Hamilton is so popular Disney Plus subscriptions have skyrocketed.  Having been away from my screen for a few days I havent seen it yet.  I hope I do before Disney caves to the CC.

It's not the first live production to be broadcast on television.  In recent years we've seen Grease, Sound of Music and Cats done live on television.  Great theater doesn't always make for good film (The Wiz).  Theater live on TV is fun.  But great theater is awesome.

I'm thankful I was exposed to theater fairly early in life.  It's an appreciation that goes beyond simply enjoying a movie.  Part of the appreciation is knowing what goes into it.

Yes, that's me as Emile in South Pacific.  In theater there are no retakes or lip sinking.  In the film South Pacific the actor playing Emile didnt do the singing.  Go figure.  And you just cant imitate the energy and awe of a production number on screen.

Theater has its greats.  Rogers and Hamerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Geoffrey Holder.  Good Broadway shows can run for years, not weeks.  The Broadway theater is an intimate setting that is difficult to describe.  I remember my first NYC show, The Wiz.  It's still one of my favorites.  Then there's Joseph, Cats, Les Mis, Chorus Line and other lesser known shows.  Whether in New York, Chicago or my local theater, they are all experiences I remember.

Here's a shot from Bye, Bye Birdie (me with the wardrobe malfunction).

It's a bug you get, or maybe not.  I fear the loss of arts in public schools is creating generations that will never appreciate it.  I hope productions like Hamilton will peak more interest and maybe more opportunity.

How about you, did you ever catch the bug?
