This Saturday is Puppy Mill Awareness Day

According to the Humane Society of the United States, our country has some 10,000 industrial-scale dog breeders, or puppy mills.  In these operations, our canine loved ones are just products for sale.  As described by the Humane Society of Utah, the animals are kept stacked in cages, much like battery hens, given almost no medical care, and bred to exhaustion in disease-inducing conditions.

Ergo, "Adopt, don't shop!"  The money that would purchase a pet-store dog or cat could also be used to pay an adoption fee at your nearest shelter, buy a veterinary health-insurance policy, and support your nearest local humane organization's Trap, Neuter, and Release efforts.

Anyone looking for a calm or dander-free animal, or in search of some other special criterion should read this guide to seeking responsible breeders, from the ASPCA.

To anyone here who has pets they love, spread the word!
