Next week (September 17th -- 23rd, is Farm Animal Awareness Week

Tomorrow is the start of a new week for animal advocacy.  Many animal-welfare groups are involved in an effort to rid North America of factory-farming and mass-cruelty to the animals that give us our milk, wool, eggs, and meat.

The ASPCA has a "Shop With Your Heart" survey and informational service to help customers find meat and milk substitutes and brands whose standards for animal husbandry are acceptably humane.  They also have a "Supermarket Scorecard" of chain supermarkets that either do or do not restrict their purchasing to humanely-treated animals, and a list of pet-food companies that demand higher welfare standards for the animals they slaughter to make food for our cats and dogs.  Finally, they have a window called "Advocating for Stronger Laws"  which presents many online opportunities for people to demand more accountability for farm-regulation on the part of  the U.S. government.  Vegan.com has posted a long list of farm animal sanctuaries that accept visits from tourists; these are in over 30 U.S. states, nine more in five Canadian provinces, and others in 15 countries around the world.  Both organizations will offer plenty of information on how to replace animal products with plant-based substitutes.

This is a massively boring little listicle, but ridding the continent of factory farms, their cruelty, and their huge streams of toxic pollution is one of the most urgent matters facing anyone who care about animals, ecosystems, or their own souls.  Happy surfing, everybody!
