Mostly for or against?
With all the kerfuffle lately over ChatGPT, I decided to look into it. Upon my initial inspection, it seems that ChatGPT is a little more sophisticated than Siri or Alexa, going beyond just giving links, the weather, and/or doing some fast math calculations. Chat GPT is able to perform more complicated tasks, like writing you up a short story about, say, Susan, an avid mountain climber who falls and breaks a leg. Here’s what I got when I asked ChatGPT for that:
Susan had always been a fearless mountain climber, conquering peaks that dared to challenge her spirit. Her latest expedition took her to the treacherous heights of the Himalayas, where she aimed to ascend a peak that had never been summited before.
With every step, Susan felt the thrill of adventure coursing through her veins. She relished the biting cold, the howling winds, and the breathtaking beauty of the snow-covered landscape. But as she neared the summit, disaster struck. A loose rock sent her tumbling, and she crashed into a jagged outcrop.
Pain seared through her body as she lay there, unable to move. Panic set in, but Susan knew she had to remain calm. Her satellite phone was within reach, and she managed to call for help. The rescue team, led by her loyal friend and climbing partner, John, was dispatched immediately.
Hours felt like an eternity as Susan waited in agony, her neck broken and her future uncertain. The cold seeped into her bones, but she clung to the hope that help was on its way.
Finally, the rescue team arrived, and John's face appeared above her. Tears welled up in Susan's eyes as she whispered, "I can't feel my legs."
The team worked with incredible precision and care, immobilizing her neck and securing her to a stretcher. It was a painstaking effort to lower her down the mountain, with each movement causing excruciating pain.
Days turned into weeks as Susan fought for her life in the hospital. She faced surgeries, physical therapy, and the grim reality that she might never climb again. But she was determined not to let her accident define her.
With unwavering determination, Susan embarked on a new kind of ascent—one of recovery and resilience. She defied the odds, regaining partial use of her legs and rebuilding her strength, one step at a time.
Though she couldn't return to the Himalayas, Susan found solace in mentoring young climbers and sharing her indomitable spirit. She discovered that the mountains she once conquered were not just peaks of rock and ice; they were also the challenges she faced within herself.
Susan's story became an inspiration to many, a testament to the human spirit's ability to endure and overcome. She may have fallen from great heights, but she rose again, stronger than ever, a living testament to the power of determination and the unwavering spirit of a true mountain climber.
Impressive! It can even rewrite that story with different details, if you ask it to. Or maybe you want ChatGPT to write you up a quick sales contract for your house or car, or maybe a cover letter to go along with your resume. No problem. Give it a few details, and voila! Then you tweak it to your liking.
Anyway, you get the picture. ChatGPT is quite interactive. The developers acknowledge it’s still in its infancy, not yet foolproof, and will still make some mistakes. But they’re working on getting the bugs out.
So, some questions:
- How do you feel about Chat GPT?
- Do you or have you used it for anything?
- Does it, for example, open the door for students to cheat on their homework, or rather, it helps teach them how to write better/more clearly?
- Is it something that stifles creativity, letting AI do the thinking for us?
- Is it more like a tool to make our lives easier, like having a dishwasher versus doing dishes by hand? 😁
Give us your general thoughts on the ChatGPT app. Are you mostly for or against it?
