The Chicken or the Egg?

Commercialism: I will define it simply here as the buying and selling of goods and services.

Commercialism, via the media, seems to tell us what to eat, what to wear, how to look, what to drive, what to value, how to belong, how to be successful, how to find a mate, etc., and etc.  Societies are greatly influence by commercialism, and commercialism thrives only by way of a society’s willing participation.

But have you ever wondered who controls whom there? What I mean is, does a society tell commercialism what it wants, or does commercialism tell a society what it should want?  Like the chicken and the egg, which comes first and who has the most influence?
