On The Lighter Side - The Peppermint Patty Edition

In a speech at the meeting of the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC), Ted Cruz referred to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki as “Peppermint Patty.”

But I wonder–is someone calling Psaki “Peppermint Patty” really an insult? Why does Cruz think it is an insult? Like Psaki (see the video above), I know many people, including myself, who loved Peppermint Patty. My only guess is that Peppermint Patty has a deep voice, an abrupt style, and comes across as a “tomboy.” Perhaps Peppermint Patty is not feminine enough for Cruz and his Christian Right supporters. Perhaps he is implying that she is gay or in a relationship with Marcie (comedian Chris Rock suggested this). I can’t think of any other reason why comparing someone to Peppermint Patty would be a laugh-line at CPAC. Whatever the case, Cruz, who claims to be an evangelical Christian, continues to play the politics of demonizing and degrading his enemies.

Jen could call Ted Cruz "Theodore", the way Peppermint Patty calls Charlie Brown "Chuck" and Lucy "Lucille".
