Do you still engage in hero worship?

Definition: “Hero worship” is an excessive admiration for someone and a belief that they are special or perfect. Synonyms: idolization, adoration, superhero

I’m not talking about someone you are just especially fond of, in love with, or for whom you have a lot of respect. Many of us have such feelings for other people. No, I’m talking about something that is beyond the pale. I’m talking about people who hang on their hero’s every word; someone who can do no wrong, in their eyes.  Someone who they usually try to emulate and/or take their cues from.  For example, DJT would likely be a superhero to many in the MAGA crowd.

Questions:

  • If you have such superheroes that you worship, list them.  Why are they your heroes?
  • What’s the difference between hero worship and just being fond of or respectful of someone?  How do you decide when someone’s mindset has gone from “just admiration” to “has passed over into hero worship?”
  • Though it needn’t be, can sexual attraction be a part of the formula for inducing hero worship?  Some sort of sexual fantasy about their superhero?
  • For young people, is seeking out heroes to worship just part of their normal “searching for their identity” process?  Did you do that when you were young?
  • Is hero worship a cult-like attraction?
  • Is there any shame in hero-worshiping?

Let’s talk in depth about the workings/ins-and-outs of hero worship.
