How the media has already lost Democrats the election
2016 was a weird year, for so many reasons. Deaths of celebrities skyrocketed, hate crimes went up, and the worst scum of the nation gathered together to drag us down to their level and anoint their leader as President of the USA. And all of this was helped along by news media.
Trump got far more coverage than any of his rivals in the GOP, because he was entertaining and no one took his run seriously. Then after he was nominated, the media fixated on his every rally, every war crimes advocacy, every Islamaphobic comment, and every other immoral act and corruption inherent in that man. Every utterance was met with the same lead-in and coverage as a President's State of the Union address.
And the Democrats? They were constantly asked how they reacted to Trump's latest horrible thing. Rarely were their rallies getting the same attention, and as soon as Clinton was nominated, the entire narrative became how does she react to Trump's latest rally? The time coverage and angle was so entirely skewed that Trump seemed like the incumbent, with Clinton trying to convince the nation to replace him with her.
Now, almost four years later? No difference. Every Trump rally is covered, not only by news but also by comedy shows. But any of the Democrat candidates? Barely a whisper. Trump has been campaigning for years. It's not like his rallies are for his presidency. It's all a part of his reelection campaign. And yet the media still shines the spotlight on him, and foregoes any attention for the Democrats.
Name the last Warren rally you saw on the news. The last Yang policy idea. The last Buttigieg rally. It's the debate, isn't it? Or a small campaign event where Biden challenged someone to do pushups. It's never a standard coverage.
Do I think this will change after a nominee is chosen among the Democrats? Not likely. The media still hasn't learned its lesson that focusing on disasters makes people think disasters are normal.
So forestalling all changes, and knowing how passionate people are about throwing Trump and his cult out of office, I don't think it will be enough. Not until media takes coverage of Democrats seriously. God forbid they take independents seriously, but this is getting ridiculously one-sided.
