Politics in comic strips??!

 Who put politics in "the funnies?"  

The answer shouldn't surprise anyone, but it often does.  They've always been there.  Always.  From the earliest of strips, Hogan's Alley (starring The Yellow Kid)


to today's strips, such as On the Fast Track


Comic strip historians generally concede that the most blatantly political strip in history was Little Orphan Annie.  Here's the creator's view of unions.


But capitalists were good, fair and worthy of admiration!


Much gentler, and drawn far better was Walt Kelly's Pogo.  Here's his take on Joe McCarthy:



Then there was Al Capp's L'il Abner, which started out left wing


but turned incredibly right wing during the 1960s.



The best known strip for political commentary today is Trudeau's Doonesbury, which is now over 50 years old.


And there are some comic strips that really are nothing more than political thumping all the time.  Best example is the thudingly dull Mallard Fillmore.


So time to share!  Which strips tickle your fancy?  Which have politics you like?  Which have politics you hate?  How about politics you find incomprehensible?

Because don't kid yourself--on some level, they're ALL political!

Philosophical Question #14 – Lifestyle Choices

Here is an interesting question in my list of philosophical questions: 1.) Should governments have penalties for those who live unhealthy lifestyles? A list of unhealthy lifestyles would include things like smoking, drinking, illegal drugs, prostitution, and other “vice” type activities. I guess the “government penalties” would be referring to monetary punishments, withholding medical treatments (insurance companies would love that), possibly imposing/regulating very high (exorbitant) prices on things considered unhealthy in order to cut down on their use, and other possibilities. 2.) Or, would you say that living an unhealthy lifestyle, likely resulting in a LOT of eventual personal pain and suffering, should be punishment enough for unhealthy lifestyles? When people make bad choices in life, often in their youth where ignorance and immediate gratification takes them over,  3.)
