How to teach children at the store

"Poodlegirl" is/was a frequent visitor to uexpress via Disqus.  A few year ago, she left this comment on Dear Abby regarding how to teach children discipline and patience without breaking their spirits.  I figured this might be a handy piece of advice for the parents and grandparents reading this blog, too.  The OP is entitled "Teacher Is Appalled by Mom Texting Throughout Conference;" unfortunately, to dig out Poodlegirl's comment from the original, I would have to go back through almost four years of comments to reach the link!  Here's the original letter, anyway.

Poodlegirl on Dear Abby: Letter # , December 8th, 2019: Watching a bored little boy sitting in the grocery cart with a sad look on his face while his Mom talked on the phone caught my attention. He tried to stand up and she swatted him on the butt without missing a beat on her phone. It brought back memories of the fun games I played with my kids at the store. Learning colors, shapes and words. They made their own lists at home by drawing a couple pictures of foods. We interacted with people, they knew the checker’s name and gave her candy at Christmas. They learned about food, they learned about money and they learned how to behave. So sad and so many missed opportunities.
