What would a post-apocalyptic world look like?

Would the survivors realize the errors their ancestors committed, and work towards a better world, or would the whole cycle of greed, hatred, and bigotry start all over again?

That is of course, IF there are survivors, there likely wouldn't be, but I am asking for a supposition here, of how those that survive would react, what kind of new world they would build?

Many sci-fi books have been written and many sci-fi movies made that don't really give a good account of a post-apocalyptic future - remember Mad Max?

There is the thought as well, that some corners of the world would survive since they aren't targets: NZ, northern Canada, South Africa, etc. Then there is the question of nuclear fallout will eventually wipe them out as well - aka On The Beach.

But if there are survivors will they resort to isolated communities like the ones hinted at in the book The Chrysalids?

John Wyndham in The Chrysalids draws out the suspense in a way that forces the reader to reflect on a post-apocalyptic dystopia. In a world in which mutations run rampant, people take measures to preserve the purity of the human race.

Will it be dog eat dog, or a way for mankind to mature and realize a new reality?

So............ postulate!

Expand if you so desire, what other books would you suggest that give a vision of a post-apocalyptic world that you found intriguing?
