The Last Ten Years In (US-Centric) Political News, in Short Form
By Best in Moderation
As we move on to a new decade, I find it somewhat fun to remember all the craziness of the last one. But I also have a short attention span, so I figured I'd write down just some things I remember per year. Give it a go in the comments!
2010: Explosions, earthquakes and storms rock the world. Sean Penn goes on TV to lecture the US. US TV viewers discover Downton Abbey.
2011: Japan Tsunami blows up nuclear reactor. Norway tries to beat US mass shooting records. Obama caps Bin Laden.
2012: Cruise ships become less popular. Obama remains popular. Americans learn the word "jubilee" and Whitney Houston stops loving you.
2013: Terrorist threats rise, as does ethno-nationalists. Thatcher and Mandela say "nope." So do thousands of Filipinos, but it barely makes the news.
2014: Russia holds winter Olympics in Southern-most point of Russia, gets hungry and eats Crimea. Ebola resurfaces, along with ISIS. World far too distracted by "Gangnam Style" to care.
2015: Everyone becomes Charlie, Iran signs nuclear deal. Conservatives win elections worldwide. Completely unrelated, Facebook usership exceeds 1 billion people.
2016: Bernie Sanders gets support of the activists. Hillary Clinton wins the Democrats and the People. Donald Trump wins the presidency through the Electoral College. A lot famous people check out. Something about papers in Panama, probably not important.
2017: Ariana Grande gives concert in London, did not get good reviews. Mosques attacked in retaliation. Nazis march to support Confederates and vice versa, after rallying in support of Donald Trump and the right wing. Probably completely unrelated, conservatives worldwide start losing support.
2018: Parkland shooting reminds US residents that children are not bulletproof. Support for Trump by Republicans increases and Putin is re-elected. Baby Trump flown over London, children are separated from parents and the US pulls out of Paris Climate Accords. Obviously unrelated, California is on fire. US journalist killed by Saudi prince, aided in defense by POTUS's son. Stephan Hawking says "f*ck this."
2019: Yellow vests become fashion icon in France. US Women's team makes soccer history; POTUS attacks female squad. Sweden sends their girl into the fray. Boris Johnson wins election, wisely does not immediately take call from US as Trump is impeached for bad phone behavior.
2020: Nothing much happened, stayed home a lot.
