See You At The Pole - Lance

Today, students around the world will gather at their school flag poles at 7 am for a time of prayer.  This is a student led initiative that has grown worldwide since 1990, when the first syatp was initiated.  Several years ago my daughter, then a teen, organized the first at her public school.

What makes this event special is that, as I mentioned, it is student led.  Students that care about their schools and communities gather to make a difference.  School staff and parents are welcome to join their kids yet do not lead.  While there have been incidents of adult intervention, they are frowned upon.

Some might say, "school prayer is illegal."  That is simply not true.  This right was affirmed by the Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.  In1995 the Clinton administration supported these activities in the assignment of the President's SOE for legalization of particular school religious activities as long as they passed Constitutional guidelines.  Even the ACLU approves of student-led SYATP events held before or after school, provided the school neither encourages nor discourages participation.

So, if your out and about early this morning and see these young men and women give them a toot.  Or, even stop and join them.  This nation needs all the help it can muster.
