Answer to: What is it?

I really thought the “green” would give it away.  Many came close by recognizing it was plant-related.  And who hasn’t seen this little thingy left over on their plate?  Non-broccoli eaters, that’s who.

Yes, it was a… what do they call this thing?  Is it a speck, a sliver, a strand of broccoli?  It can’t be a stalk, as in stalk of celery, because it’s way too small.  Or does size matter?  You’ve heard of Carl Sagan’s “worldlets.”  Is it a broc-let?  A flor-ette?  A broccoli-ette (ette meaning “little”)?  A “stem” of broccoli? Nah, can’t be.  But it does have a stem and an apparent flower, so...

I love the way it almost looks fractal-like, with repeating patterns.  We’ve all heard of Romanesco Broccoli:

Does anyone know what this little leftover thingy is called?  How would one even begin to look it up?? A chart of the anatomy of broccoli? Enquiring minds want to know.
