Memorial Day 2021: What is it and why do people celebrate it?

Image
O riginally known as Decoration Day, the holiday now known as  Memorial Day  will be observed in the USA this Monday, May 31. It is a day for honoring the men and women who have died while on duty with the US military and it is a day where Americans across the country pay their respects, often by visiting military cemeteries or memorials. When is Memorial Day 2021? This year, Memorial Day will take place on Monday May 31. But, it's not always held on the last day of May. Instead, Memorial Day is held on the final Monday of May each year. In 2021, that happens to also be the final day of the fifth month. It has been a holiday since the years following the end of the Civil War, which ended in 1865. Since then, American families have mourned fallen soldiers at this time of year. Since 1971, it has been an official federal holiday in the USA. That legislation created a three-day weekend for federal employees around the final Monday of every May. Why do people celebrate Memo...

New ‘God Bless the USA Bible’

Image
A new Bible that includes the U.S. Constitution and the pledge of allegiance is generating controversy before it has even hit the market. The “God Bless the USA Bible” is expected to go on sale in September, in time to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, according to a Nashville-based marketer who will distribute the book. It has already prompted cries of blasphemy and concerns that the book will promote Christian nationalism, the idea that America is and should remain a Christian nation.\ The Bible will also include lyrics from singer Lee Greenwood’s hit song “God Bless the USA,” which topped pop charts after Sept. 11, 2001. Using the historic King James Version, the “God Bless the USA Bible” has about 600 preorders for $49.99 and will ship in September, said Hugh Kirkpatrick, who said he wanted to inspire unity in the country. Let's Get Personal

Image
Something in a recent discussion I had with Alex reminded me of something. Now, granted, some of the stuff in this OP will be TMI, so participate as you feel comfortable. Simply, when did YOU lose your virginity and is it a pleasant memory, not so pleasant or as in my case, amusing? IN my case, I guess you would have to ask, what is losing your virginity? My first sexual encounter was at age 13 (I kid you not) but was not exactly intercourse, that didn't happen till I was 16. At 13, girl I knew back then, a couple of years older than myself, invited me to a pool party at her parent's home however when I got there there were no parents and there was no party, just her and myself. Beside the pool was a changing booth (for lack of a better word I can think of, it was like an enclosed gazebo for changing into your swimming suit) and when I went in to get out of my civies and into my bathing suit she walked in on me stark naked. A little fondling and well....... you can guess the r...

The Last Ten Years In (US-Centric) Political News, in Short Form

Image
By Best in Moderation As we move on to a new decade, I find it somewhat fun to remember all the craziness of the last one. But I also have a short attention span, so I figured I'd write down just some things I remember per year. Give it a go in the comments! 2010 : Explosions, earthquakes and storms rock the world. Sean Penn goes on TV to lecture the US. US TV viewers discover Downton Abbey. 2011 : Japan Tsunami blows up nuclear reactor. Norway tries to beat US mass shooting records. Obama caps Bin Laden.  2012 : Cruise ships become less popular. Obama remains popular. Americans learn the word  "jubilee" and Whitney Houston stops loving you. 2013 : Terrorist threats rise, as does ethno-nationalists. Thatcher and Mandela say "nope." So do thousands of Filipinos, but it barely makes the news.  2014 : Russia holds winter Olympics in Southern-most point of Russia, gets hungry and eats Crimea. Ebola resurfaces, along with ISIS. World far too distracted by "Gangn...

The gradual death of the individual

Image
We came a long way. We traded our caves for smart homes and prolonged our life from 30 till over a 1 0 0. We have all the information we ever need at the tip of our fingers and went from an honest fistfight, with blood on the walls, to bashing each other on the internet. Not sure if the last one is actual progress, but it sets the right tone for the rest of this article. The keyboard warrior replaced the real warrior. The samurai with a code of honor, who fought for what he believed was right, he who serves. The noble master of his craft,  dedicating his life  for his purpose. The one who would take his own life, to save the cause. This legendary warrior made way for the modern time’s keyboard warrior. Not worthy of the name warrior, not fighting for a cause, definitely not a master of his craft. Just a troll who is frustrated, who chooses the path of anonymity to compensate for  his lack of character in everyday life . We spread our cramped up emotions of frustration and...

Anger after 80 Fla. yearbook photos are altered to mask female students' cleavage

Image
Flipping open a yearbook for the first time is normally a moment full of excitement -- but at one Florida high school, some students were left in shock after seeing that their yearbook portraits had been edited. When  Bartram Trail High School  freshman Riley O'Keefe saw her yearbook photo, she noticed a black bar was added to cover more of her breasts. "I couldn't believe that they printed the yearbook looking like that," O'Keefe, 15, told CNN. "And then I started to flip through the yearbook and saw more and more girls with their chest edited." She texted her mother a photo of it on Wednesday from the school in St. Johns, Florida. "I know she's worn (the outfit) in school hundreds of times because it's like her go-to outfit," her mother Stephanie Fabre told CNN on Monday, saying she believes the outfit had met the district's dress code. The dress code states that girls' tops "must cover the entire shoulder and they must...

Happy 80th birthday, Bob Dylan!

Image
Holey Moley, guess who turned 80 years old today? That's right, it's the kid from Hibbing, Minnesota, the man who never stopped touring as the decades passed.  Bob Dylan, his own self! He changed the culture.  He changed the music.  He won the goddamned Nobel Prize for Literature!  Bob Dylan! So here's your chance to wish him a happy birthday and name your favorite Dylan songs! (AlextheKay picks this one)

HOT TOPICS

Image
I am fairly certain I am not the only one from here that visits OTHER political forums, in fact, some - particularly the less moderated ones, do quite well. I primarily participate HERE (here has my name on it) and on Germaine's and when I don't want politics - on Kat's. But that doesn't stop me from dropping in, so to speak, on other political forums to see what the temperature is. Some topics I have found, no matter where I roam, can simply not be discussed. Try discussing gun legislature or gun restrictions on forums that are less moderated. Calling it a "shitfest" would be under-stated. Try a forum where religion rules and discuss abortion. OH MY!  And over the last 5 years or so, of course "Trumpism" has been a hot topic. I have asked in the past if I should lift some of the rules and unban some of our worst past disrupters to bring more "life" here, and overwhelmingly most of you said "HELL NO SNOWY!" BUT..... in your trave...

Biblical authority

Image
While cleaning out my bookmarks I came across this; why I bookmarked it escapes me but it looked as though it might be a peg for discussion. our thinking in every area. This means we take what we hear from culture, family, friends, the media, and even Christian leaders, and we compare it to the Bible . If we don’t do this, we are susceptible to dangerous false doctrines and are blown about by every wind of teaching. (Avery Foley in Answers in Genesis) There are a number of assumptions here: That the Bible is the word of god rather than a fiction written by men That it is the only “holy” book which matters That even in Mainly Christian countries everyone is bound by bible rules That we are unable to live responsibly without bible rules Foley goes in to say: When culture or the church strays from biblical authority, everyone does what’s right in his or her own eyes. Moral relativism runs rampant, the gospel is watered down, and sin abounds. Anyone who wants to read the whole thi...

Speaking of Vaccination

Image
Vaccination is big news today, and I managed, through sources who have been reliable in the past, to obtain an interview with Edward Jenner, who coined the word “vaccination” in 1798. Jenner (1749-1823), who is credited with saving more human lives than anyone else in history, became a political scientist after he died. Nothing much else to do in Heaven, he told me, which is a pretty boring place, though it’s got a great library. Jenner said the United States today is suffering from political cowpox — the Trump Republican party — a milder but still virulent form of political smallpox, known as Fascism. As seventh-grade science teachers are still allowed to teach us, Jenner developed vaccination after noticing that English milkmaids seemed to be immune to smallpox after they contracted a milder form of it, called cowpox. Cowpox is a member of the Orthopoxvirus family, which includes the  variola virus, which causes smallpox. Until Jenner coined the word vaccination in a scien...

Cracker Barrel

Image
Ever eaten at a Cracker Barrel restaurant? Well, the name of the place is insulting to white folks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracker_(term) So Cancel Culture has a duty to do away with such a name, right? How about renaming the restaurant All Lives Barrel instead? Facing pressure from its conservative base, the famous country store and restaurant is changing its name. https://gishgallop.com/cracker-barrel-changes-to-all-lives-barrel/ Lebanon, TN – Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBRL) announced that it would be changing the name of its over 660 restaurants and stores to All Lives Barrel starting immediately. Founded in 1969, All Lives Barrel features “traditional” Southern cuisine with appearance and decor designed to resemble an old-fashioned general store. Time to change the cheese too?

Covid Vaccine Passports

Image
Do YOU support the idea of having a Covid Vaccine Passport? Not going to be mandatory, but may be required to travel. Yet, cue the debate. You need a passport to travel, a voter ID to vote, so why not a Vaccine Passport? Because SO MANY in the good ole U.S of A. simply aren't planning on getting a vaccine. The arguments: In the U.S., federal officials say there are no plans to make them broadly mandatory. In some states, Republican governors have issued orders barring businesses or state agencies from asking people to show proof of vaccination. Objections revolve mostly around privacy and security — how people’s personal information will be stored — and fairness. Critics say the passports will benefit people and countries with more access to vaccines. Supporters say they could make reopenings faster and easier. Proof of vaccination or a negative test could be a way for businesses and schools to reassure customers, students and parents that steps are being taken to limit transmissi...

Weird $#iT

Image
I wasn't sure how Snow would feel about the title of this one, so I disguised it badly.  But, yes, this one's about  The internet has provided a delightful explosion of weird stuff, material that used to be found in small groups, among odd clubs and in the basement of wonderfully disreputable people.  But back in the day, here in Cleveland, there was a whacko who was creating "The Asylum for Shut-Ins" for Public Access Television.  If you were in the know, you'd tune in that channel on your cable box back in the 1980s, and you'd see this: Mind you, that's just the opening titles.  This puppet would badger and insult you for 30 minutes at a time!  (For more, just plug "Asylum for Shut Ins" into Youtube). And there's so much more!  Why lead a mayonnaise life, when you can watch stuff like this: or this! Well, you get the idea.  So now, it's your turn!  Don't be namby pamby and yell Share your weird shit with the rest of us! --AlextheKa...
