Dealing with “reality”…

1. the world or the state of things as they actually exist

Got the yen to talk about this.  Did you know that what we call reality is not all it’s cracked up to be?  It’s true (she said, as she chuckled under her breath).  We experience only a small slice of it; a perspective, a limited niche, merely a place on a perch.  But reality “really” is so much more.  We only barely scratch its surface. 

Like the spectral vision of the butterfly or the approximately 100-trilliion neutrinos that pass through our bodies each second, much of the reality around us is "out of phase" with our personal space-time continuum; our relative perch. 

For some examples, relative to the sun (which also moves through the greater cosmos in its own right), we are traveling through space at 67,000 mph (107,000 km/h) and don’t even know it.  That’s mighty damned fast.  We stay tethered to earth in spite of the fact that it spins (relative to the equator) at 460 meters per second--or roughly 1,000 miles per hour.  Another great example of unreal, mind-boggling realities would be the seven or eight dimensions that work out so well on the chalkboard.  They’ve mathematically got to be there; we just don’t have direct access to them, awareness of them, as far as we know/”real”ize.  Here’s another example… did you know that you have never actually physically “touched” anything?  You’ve only touch it in/with your mind.

And just to further hone in on realities, we also have the personal (subjective) element to contend with.  Politically, we’ve come to call those alt-realities and alt truths.  And it’s not just politics; religions also tout realities (heaven/hell/purgatory) as personal realities, even though, like extra-dimensions, no one has ever gained direct access to those either.  They exist merely on paper.  Oh, these alt (personal) realities are real to those who are stuck in/subscribe to them.  As real as your and my personal realities are to us.  In that way, we share each other’s “reality situation” conundrums.

Actually, I don’t expect much traffic on this OP.  Just some Sunday morning banter between blog acquaintances/friends; those who also wonder about such things as I do. 🙂

How do you feel about the concept of reality?  Talk (type) about it.  Do you take reality at "face value" and are reconciled to that?  Or do you ever think deeper about it?  If so, in what way?

Philosophical Question #14 – Lifestyle Choices

Here is an interesting question in my list of philosophical questions: 1.) Should governments have penalties for those who live unhealthy lifestyles? A list of unhealthy lifestyles would include things like smoking, drinking, illegal drugs, prostitution, and other “vice” type activities. I guess the “government penalties” would be referring to monetary punishments, withholding medical treatments (insurance companies would love that), possibly imposing/regulating very high (exorbitant) prices on things considered unhealthy in order to cut down on their use, and other possibilities. 2.) Or, would you say that living an unhealthy lifestyle, likely resulting in a LOT of eventual personal pain and suffering, should be punishment enough for unhealthy lifestyles? When people make bad choices in life, often in their youth where ignorance and immediate gratification takes them over,  3.)
