A Partisan Mess

As the House Minority Leader Kevin MacCarthy moves to censure Adam Schiif, Democrats are refusing to vote to open an official impeachment investigation.  Instead, they're seeking a to investigate the Trump administrations actions under the banner of "impeachment inquiry".

Speaker Pelosi is struggling to maintain control over her caucus and the more radical wings of the party who see removing the President by force as a worthwhile goal, do not have the unique insight as the Speaker of the House.  Her intimate knowledge of the process has put her in conflict with earlier comments she made when the shoe was on the other foot.

At the end of this debacle in 1998, the Senate would not vote for impeachment with the required 67 votes.  What both parties, and even the Special Prosecutor realized in hind-sight was that impeachment was incredibly decisive and produced a negative outcome on all fronts.  Those who felt the President was being abused, became more intransigent in their opinion.  Likewise with those who felt the President had violated his oath of office.

From a political perspective, Pelosi has been dealt a bad hand.  She can't move forward with an official impeachment inquiry without surrendering more control to her Republican colleges.  They would be allowed to participate in questioning witnesses instead of the stonewalling that is happening now.  In an ironic twist, in what should be a bipartisan fact finding process, the inquiry has instead become a internal dirt digging operation to damage a political candidate before the 2020 race.

Doesn't that sound familiar?
