Come on and join the Party!!!!

America takes itself very seriously.  Very seriously indeed.  Why that is so, well, that's hard to explain.  Perhaps it's because of our very impressive history of political parties.

For example, there was once a party known primarily as the "Know Nothings."  They lived up to the name, too.  They wanted to know nothing about Catholics or other immigrants.  They called themselves the "Native American Party."  No indigenous Americans need apply, however, because they were talking about White Protestants and White Protestants only!

Then there was the "States' Rights Democratic Party," formed to oppose the re-election of, hmm, the Democratic Party nominee of the time, Harry Truman?  Say what, now?

These tools were known as the "Dixiecrats."  They didn't like ideas like equal rights for anybody but Whites and were particularly upset about the recently freed slave population ("recently" meaning "about 100 years ago") getting to vote and being integrated into the military and stuff like that.

There have been a lot of third parties, but few have fared well, either in elections or in retrospectives.  My favorite was very brief indeed.  It was the All Night Party, with its 1976 candidate, Howard the Duck.

So have you ever voted third party?  Ever see one that didn't make you wince in retrospect?  Or do you just think that with what we have, we couldn't actually make things worse no matter who we vote for?  Tell us!
