Why is Wednesday Called Hump Day?

Image
Why is Wednesday Called Hump Day? Referring to Wednesday as "hump day” is a fairly modern tradition in American English. The term represents the idea that a week can be visualized as a mound or hill that a person climbs, with Wednesday typically being the middle or peak of the week. There is some disagreement over which day of the week should be the "hump," since it varies depending on when a person works and how a week begins. There are other sources for negative associations with Wednesdays, and few holidays are regularly celebrated on this day. The Image of a Hump "Hump day" refers to the idea that a week, especially a work week, is like a hill. Monday and Tuesday are days when a person "climbs" up, since they are the beginning or start of a traditional work week. At the end of Wednesday, the worker has reached the pinnacle of the week, and work on Thursday and Friday represents climbing back down toward the weekend. This image refers specifically ...

And the winner for "Most Boring Winner Ever" is......

Image
So the other night I'm perusing a list of Oscar Winning Films , and I'm struck by how many I absolutely never, never, never want to watch again.  But I'm a generous guy. If I'm going to insult a film, I'll give it another award for being boring!  That's fair, isn't it? My nominees for The Most Boring Oscar Winner Ever are-- Out of Africa .  Panoramas.  More panoramas.  Yet more!  Wow, what pretty pictures. That go on for hours. And hours. And hours. The English Patient, a film about a Hungarian hospitalized in an Italian monastery.  I don't remember why the title seemed to make sense at the time. The Greatest Show on Earth.  No, it really isn't. Dances with Wolves.   Famously seen as one man's vision.  Unfortunately, a lot of the rest of us watched it, too. How Green Was My Valley.  Best remembered for beating Citizen Kane.  Comes to that, only remembered for beating Citizen Kane. Others?  An embarrassment of ri...

Deleting link. May be a problem. ☹️ Sorry about that.  Yes, lots of nasty problems in the world.  Sometimes you just need a break from it all. Ran across this trivia game yesterday.   " Name the state capitals" (this is mostly for the U.S. crowd here, but everyone is invited to play).   50 multiple choice questions.   Other than planting some cookies, it appears to be otherwise harmless. If you have the time, give it a try.   Been a long time since high school, but I got 44 out of 50.   Can you (I’m sure you can) beat that?  Did anyone get a perfect 50?? Link to game: (deleted) Thanks for favoriting and playing.   And tell us your score when finished. (by Primal “44” Soup)

100-Year-Old Giant Sturgeon Caught In Canada, Thrown Back In River

Image
100-Year-Old Giant Sturgeon Caught In Canada, Thrown Back In River The white sturgeon had not been previously tagged, leading to officials suspecting that this may have been the first time it had been caught. Bhavya Sukheja Once caught and photographed, the fish was released back into the water. Fishermen in British Columbia, Canada, recently caught an enormous white sturgeon that is over ten feet long and estimated to be at least 100 years old.  According to a Facebook post, “newbie” fishermen Steve Ecklund and Mark Boise went on a fishing trip near Lillooet with guides from River Monster Adventures, Nick McCabe and Tyler Speed, on Father's Day, when they caught the giant fish. It took almost two hours to reel in the white sturgeon. The video showed the beast leaping out of the water, revealing its true size.  Mr Ecklund informed that the sturgeon measured 10 feet and one inch long, and had a girth of 57 inches. “Our last fish of the day ends up being the largest sturgeon cau...

The coming US dystopia?

One might think that the overturn of Roe vs Wade is the lowest that the the SCOTUS can crawl but Justice Clarence Thomas has other ideas. Here he is with the latest court attack on any liberty except that to own and flaunt as many guns as you like.  Justice Clarence Thomas wrote a concurring opinion today in the  Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case that reversed  Roe v. Wade. In it, Justice Thomas agreed that Roe should be reversed  and argued that the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) should next  revisit other “substantive due process” cases. While he wrote that he agreed that today’s ruling does not affect those  cases now, he wants the court to reconsider them and all other related cases  that relied on a “substantive due process” claim. “For that reason, in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s  substantive due process precedents." He specifically mentioned cases which  struck...

Hypothetical… (or is it)?

A short personal thread by Snowflake

Frustrated? Ya bet I am! This thread will primarily be of interest to those who have been following me over the years, even back before I had my own channel. You know I have been planning a move back to Canada. I had also hoped that once squarely landed back in the town I had lived in for 30 years, to do some more personal blogs, life stories and such. However, every step along the way God, or Fate, or Bad Luck has gotten in my way. Covid set back the time table. I owned a nice little cottage by the lake in northern Ontario that was supposed to be my retirement home, but a storm knocked a tree onto the cottage and severely damaged it.  Luckily one of the workmen I hired to do repairs was so in love with the property and location he offered me above property value  to buy the lot. So I sold it. Over the last year I have sorted out the paper work, not only for myself but for Geri as well, and it was just a matter of finding a home and the move would be happening. Now Geri ...

Annoying American Tourists

At the Peace Museum. In Hiroshima. I once got told by an American tourist that I spoke English quite well. I'm English and this was in England. I overheard the guy standing in front of me in the queue at mc D's having a meltdown: "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T ACCEPT AMERICAN DOLLARS THIS IS A MCDONALD'S!!!" this was in Poland, Europe. A very special planet

Image
A very special planet In the Solar System there is a very special planet, where the day lasts more than a whole year! In fact, Venus completes a revolution around the Sun in 225 terrestrial days, while its rotation period is 243 terrestrial days! Why Venus takes so long to complete a rotation is still being studied: so far several theories have been formulated, but none of these have been universally accepted.According to one theory, the rotation was slowed down by the tidal forces that the Sun exerted on the Venusian atmosphere. This is in fact much denser and heavier than the Earth's atmosphere and could have influenced the evolutionary history of the planet. However, this theory does not take into account that the axis of rotation of Venus is inclined by more than 177° respect to the perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic. It has therefore been hypothesized that during its formation Venus was hit by another protoplanet, which slowed its rotation and destabilized its axis. ...
