Just Say "Buggeroff"

I'm friendly, by nature. If a stranger says "hello" to me, I'll smile and reply in kind. But these days, that's not always wise.

This past weekend, a stranger greeted me in the plaza where my coffee group meets. And then, after I replied, he said, "God bless America!"
"Sure," I said.
"I'm proud to be an American!" he boasted.
"Yeah, me too," I said, and turned away. And he boomed, right in my ear, "Now that Biden's out of office!"
I said, "Take your TDS and find someone else to talk to, okay? I'm not interested."
This is where any rational person would toss an insult and leave, or just leave. Not this guy. "I have freedom of speech! I can talk to you if I want!"
After a little more of this I said, "Go away or I'll have you thrown out of here for harassing customers."
It was very much like a lot of the exchanges in the message areas of Facebook posts. He talked entirely in disconnected cliches. He was intent on getting me to listen. In a way, it was interesting. But mostly irritating.
Now I'm thinking, "So why put up with it online?"
